Yost ties Herzog with 410th managerial win

KANSAS CITY -- Nearly buried in the excitement of the Royals' 10-2 blowout win over the Brewers at Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday is the fact that manager Ned Yost took another step into the history books.

Yost claimed his 410th managerial win, tying him with Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog (1975-79) as the winningest in franchise history.

"The first person here in this room that trusts in those guys is Ned," said shortstop Alcides Escobar, who has known Yost since his days managing in Milwaukee (2003 to 2008). "I play for hard for him, and I play hard for myself and my teammates."

When Yost passed Dick Howser for the No. 2 spot back on June 8, he shrugged off the credit and took time to appreciate general manager Dayton Moore for not dismissing him in what he thought could have been "five times in the last five years."

"Never thought about it," Dayton said prior to the game. "There has been no doubt in my mind that Ned was the absolute right manager, the perfect manager for what we were experiencing at the time.

"He would never say a negative word about anybody or never felt he got a raw deal, and to me, that's the mark of a winner."

Even the first-year Royals, such as right-hander Joe Blanton, can appreciate the relaxed support they receive from their manager.

"[He] doesn't put pressure on you to do well every day," said Blanton, who earned the victory in his first start since 2013. "He knows you're coming in with enough pressure on yourself."

Rather than revel in success, though, Yost will save his comments for No. 411.

"With all due respect, I think we'll just wait one more win before we cover all that," he said.
