Jersey boy Porcello gives back to hometown

When Hurricane Sandy ripped through New Jersey in October 2012, Rick Porcello wanted to help those affected in his home state. So when Torii Hunter signed with the Tigers around the same time, and Porcello knew his No. 48 jersey would soon be going to Hunter, the young pitcher had a proposition for the veteran outfielder.

"[Porcello] said, 'The money that you offered me, could you donate it to this organization for Hurricane Sandy [relief]?'" Hunter told MLB.com. "That's the kind of guy Rick Porcello is."

Porcello's current number is 21, which he wore while attending high school at Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, N.J. During his senior year there, the right-hander went 10-0 with a 1.18 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 71 innings and was selected by multiple publications as among the top players in the country.

Porcello was a first-round pick by Detroit in that year's First Year Player Draft, and he remains a New Jersey resident in the offseason, living in Califon.
