Arenado's 39th homer dooms Dodgers in 16th

LOS ANGELES -- Nolan Arenado moved back into a tie for the National League home run lead with his 39th, a game-winning shot in the 16th inning as the Rockies outlasted the Dodgers, 5-4, on a soggy Tuesday night, and early Wednesday morning, at Dodger Stadium.

The teams went into extra innings tied at 3, then each club scored a run in the 11th to keep the game alive before Arenado gave Colorado the lead just past midnight. With one out in the 16th, Arenado launched Mat Latos' first-pitch fastball projected by Statcast™ to land 431 feet away in right-center field. It was Latos' (4-10) first career relief appearance.

Even with the loss, the Dodgers' magic number was reduced to 11 with the Giants losing to the Reds. Los Angeles leads the NL West by 7 1/2 games.

LA's magic number shrinks despite letdown in extras

"It was a relief more than anything," said Arenado, who is tied with the Nationals' Bryce Harper for tops in the NL in homers. "We battled. It was a long game. Obviously, that home run was great, but our pitchers kept us in the game so I could do that."

The teams set MLB records with 58 combined players used in the game and 24 combined pitchers used. The Rockies also set an MLB record for number of pitchers used by one team with 13 and tied the MLB record with 30 total players.

"We had a few chances," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "This time of year, you don't expect to run out of guys but we pretty much ran out of guys."

Dodgers starting pitcher Brett Anderson allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings. The left-hander struck out seven, his most in a start since July 1, but the Rockies put up three runs against him in the fourth inning behind three straight singles.

Chris Rusin was solid for the Rockies but ran out of gas in the seventh. The righty allowed a double to Adrian Gonzalez and walked A.J. Ellis, both of whom would score against reliever Boone Logan to tie the game, 3-3.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
More than one way: The Rockies struck out seven times against Anderson, but gained a 3-1 lead by making contact in the fourth. One run scored on shortstop Corey Seager's error, the other two on fielder's choice grounders by Corey Dickerson and Dustin Garneau.

Getting heated: There were some words exchanged between the dugouts after Justin Turner took out Arenado during a double play in the fourth inning. Arenado was covering second due to a defensive shift and Turner upended the Rockies' star with his slide. Mattingly came out to talk with third-base umpire John Hirschbeck after Hirschbeck and Turner had words between innings. Rockies manager Walt Weiss was also seen on TV replays yelling toward Turner.

"They've probably forgotten it by now, but if they look at it, they won't have any problem with it," Mattingly said of Turner's slide. "I'm not sure what the problem was. Arenado didn't seem to have a problem with it."

In the Rockies' clubhouse, Weiss still had a problem with it.

"Nolan really didn't have an issue with it. I was the one that did. … I thought it was late," Weiss said of the slide.

Arenado said, "I think you guys saw me saying some things. I'm not going to say what I said. But the game's over. We won." More >

Bullpen future? Rockies right-handed relievers Justin Miller and Jairo Diaz have pitched solidly enough this month to be considered part of the team's future. Miller escaped the seventh inning after entering with two on -- two runs already in -- and one out, and Diaz fanned two of the three men he faced in the eighth. Miller has had seven straight scoreless appearances and Diaz has yielded one run in 13 appearances since his promotion to the Majors.

Nearly a walk-off: The Dodgers had a chance to end the game with a walk-off in the ninth, but couldn't come through. Scott Schebler walked to lead off the inning, then Seager hit into a fielder's choice, only for DJ LeMahieu to drop the ball at second base. Schebler was then thrown out by Rockies catcher Garneau after straying too far from second base on Chris Heisey's bunt attempt. Seager advanced to second on the play and went to third on a wild pitch, but Yasmani Grandal popped out and Andre Ethier flied out to end the threat.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW
Just after hitting a go-ahead single for the Rockies in the 11th, LeMahieu was picked off by Dodgers reliever Juan Nicasio. The Rockies challenged the call on the field, but video review confirmed that the tag came down on LeMahieu's arm before he was on the base.

WHAT'S NEXT
Rockies: Lefty Jorge De La Rosa hopes to improve on a 2-5 record and 4.15 ERA in 12 career games (nine starts) at Dodger Stadium when he takes the mound in Wednesday's series finale at 8:10 p.m. MT.

Dodgers: Alex Wood will try to rebound from the worst and shortest start of his career in the 7:10 p.m. PT finale. Wood was charged with eight runs in 1 2/3 innings on Friday in Arizona. He is 1-1 in three career games (two starts) against Colorado, all when he was with Atlanta.
