Ryan, Young headline Rangers' all-time team

Players to be honored at 40th anniversary celebration in August

ARLINGTON -- Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, seven-time All-Star infielder Michael Young, two-time American League Most Valuable Player Juan Gonzalez and 13-time Gold Glove winner Ivan Rodriguez are among those who were selected to the Texas Rangers' 40th Anniversary All-Time Team.

The team was chosen from nearly 65,000 votes cast online by fans during the month of May. The team, which was selected in conjunction with the celebration of the Texas Rangers' 40th anniversary, consists of two players each at catcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, and designated hitter; six outfielders; four starting pitchers; and three relief pitchers.

Young received the most votes at shortstop and the second most at second base behind Ian Kinsler. Gonzalez was also selected to the team twice, in the outfield and at designated hitter. Rafael Palmeiro was selected to the team at first base and designated hitter.

Ryan, currently the club president, was selected to the starting rotation along with Charlie Hough, Kenny Rogers and Ferguson Jenkins. The three relievers were John Wetteland, Neftali Feliz and Jeff Russell.

Gonzalez joins an outfield of Josh Hamilton, Rusty Greer, Ruben Sierra, Nelson Cruz and Jeff Burroughs. He and Palmeiro are the designated hitters.

Rodriguez and Jim Sundberg were selected as the catchers, Palmeiro and Will Clark as the first basemen and Buddy Bell and Steve Buechele as the third basemen. Young and Elvis Andrus are the shortstops, beating out Alex Rodriguez and Toby Harrah.

The 40th Anniversary All-Time Team will be honored during the Texas Rangers' annual Alumni Weekend, Aug. 10-12. That will include the Rangers' 40th Anniversary Weekend Luncheon on Friday, Aug. 10, at the Arlington Convention Center. Tickets are on sale at texasrangers.com or by calling 817-436-5933.

Net proceeds will benefit the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation. The team will also be recognized in an on-field ceremony prior to the Saturday, Aug. 11, game against the Detroit Tigers. In addition, Eric Nadel will be inducted as the 15th member of the Texas Rangers Baseball Hall of Fame that evening.
