LHP Dorminy leads shutout as A-Fort Wayne keeps winning

Left-hander Thomas Dorminy and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout to move low Single-A Fort Wayne to the brink of a Midwest League playoff berth and two members of Double-A San Antonio were named to the post-season Texas League All-Star team Thursday.

Outfielder Yeison Asencio and right-handed pitcher Colin Rea, who is currently in the Padres rotation, were honored along with Missions pitching coach Jimmy Jones, who was named the Texas League Coach of the Year.

Rea, 25, was 3-2 with a 1.08 earned run average in 12 starts for the Missions before advancing to Triple-A El Paso and the Padres.

Asencio, 25, is hitting .303 with 23 doubles, 12 homers and 70 RBIs for San Antonio this season. He ranks fifth in the Texas League in batting average, third in RBIs and fifth in total bases.

Jones is completing his fifth season as the Missions pitching coach and his seventh in the Padres organization as a coach. The Padres' first-round pick in the 1982 draft (third overall) was 20-21 with a 4.04 ERA as a Padres pitcher and served the Padres as their bullpen coach during much of the 2012 season.

Dorminy, 23, was a 10th-round pick in the 2014 draft out of Faulkner University. He allowed four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in seven innings Thursday in Fort Wayne's 2-0 victory over Lake County - the TinCaps' 17th straight win before the 21st sellout this season at Parkview Field -- to improve to 11-7 on the season and lower his ERA to 2.94.

Dorminy has played a major role in the TinCaps strong second-half run. He is 5-1 over his last 10 starts with a 1.31 ERA as Fort Wayne has posted a 40-19 record in the second half to lead Eastern division by four games with 11 to play. Fort Wayne, which has a 24-4 record over its last 28 games, reduced its magic number to two to clinch a playoff berth.

Right-hander Nick Monroe (2.45 ERA) followed Dorminy and allowed one hit in the eighth. Right-hander Yimmi Brasoban (2.23) struck out the side in the ninth to get his 10th save.

Left fielder Edwin Moreno (.318) stretched his hitting streak to 11 straight games, going 1-for-3 with a RBI and a stolen base.

Designated hitter Trae Santos (.263) was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk with a run scored. Center fielder Michael Gettys (.233) was 2-for-4 with a steal. Shortstop Ruddy Giron (.295) was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Right fielder Franmil Reyes (.236) had a RBI double in four at-bats.
