One day after exiting DL, Plouffe back on it

MINNEAPOLIS -- Trevor Plouffe is out with another injury.

The Twins placed Plouffe on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left calf Thursday, just one day after he was activated from the seven-day concussion disabled list. Plouffe strained his calf while running before Wednesday's game. First baseman/right fielder Chris Colabello, who was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, was called right back up Thursday to replace Plouffe on the roster.

The move cannot be retroactive to when he sustained his concussion May 22 because it is a different injury and he was officially activated from the concussion DL on Wednesday. So the move is retroactive to Wednesday.

"It's two separate DL stints," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said. "One's a seven-day concussion, the other one's a 15-day. That would be illegal."

"It's different," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We looked into it three times and tried all the different arguments that he hasn't played, and even yesterday when he was activated he didn't play and hasn't since the concussion. But it doesn't work, because they have a special rule for [concussions]. So it's a bad rule. I think eight more days would be just fine."

The Twins could not afford to wait on Plouffe because of their thin bench with eight relievers on the roster. Plouffe is now eligible to return from the DL on June 13.

Jamey Carroll and Eduardo Escobar will both see action at third base in Plouffe's absence. Carroll made the start at third Thursday against the Brewers.
