Showalter wins challenge on Davis' bunt
Orioles slugger awarded first base after umpires overturn call
BALTIMORE -- Orioles slugger Chris Davis surprised the Red Sox by dropping down a bunt with a runner on first and no outs in the fourth inning Monday night. Maybe it caught the umpire off guard, too.
With Adam Jones standing on first base and the Orioles leading, 1-0, Davis bunted against the shift and forced a close play at first base on a throw from Boston starter Jake Peavy. First-base umpire Brian Gorman called Davis out and Baltimore manager Buck Showalter immediately came out of the dugout to challenge the call.
After just 27 seconds, the umpires overturned the call and Davis was safe. Showalter is 5-for-9 on challenges this season.
The successful challenge gave the O's runners on first and second with no outs with Nelson Cruz coming to the plate, but Peavy escaped the inning unscathed.
