Wilson to make start with Tillman sidelined

BALTIMORE -- Right-hander Tyler Wilson will make a spot start in place of Chris Tillman on Monday as the Orioles open up a West Coast trip in Oakland. Manager Buck Showalter announced the decision after Sunday's 6-1 loss to Detroit.

Even before the decision had been finalized, Wilson was with the team and planned to travel to Oakland as a contingency plan in case Tillman, who rolled over his left ankle last Wednesday, could not make the start.

Wilson -- who is ranked as the O's No. 9 prospect -- has trekked between Triple-A Norfolk and Baltimore on multiple occasions this season, and each callup has increased the 25-year-old's comfort level.

"I think just the familiarity of it more than anything," Wilson said. "It makes it a little bit easier to know the process, to get familiar with the Sheraton [Hotel], the walk over and know what it takes when you get in here."

Before Sunday's game, Showalter said the plan, if Tillman could not start, was to have "a work day" on Wednesday with hopes that he would start Friday.

"There are two parts to that," Showalter said before the game. "One, he's got to throw, and two, see how he feels the next day."

Wilson has appeared in five games for Baltimore this season, making a start on May 28. He has a 2.12 ERA in 17 Major League innings.

The Orioles announced after the game that reliever Jorge Rondon was optioned back to Norfolk. Rondon pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday.
