O's to host 5K walk for lung cancer awareness

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles will host the LUNGevity Foundation's Breathe Deep Baltimore 5K walk on Sept. 20 to raise funds and awareness for lung cancer in memory of Monica Pence Barlow, the O's late public relations director.

Barlow, who passed away from lung cancer in February, was a member of the organization for 14 years and spent the previous 4 1/2 years as an active advocate of LUNGevity.

The 5K walk will begin at 9 a.m. ET and conclude on the field at Camden Yards. Registration begins at 7 a.m., and participants will receive a T-shirt and refreshments. Registration fees are $25 for adults, $20 for lung-cancer survivors, $15 for students and seniors, and $10 for youth. There is no race fee for children 4 and under.

Fans can register online now at www.orioles.com/lungevity. The first 500 registrants will receive a ticket to the Orioles 7:05 p.m. game that night vs. the Boston Red Sox.

All proceeds will benefit the LUNGevity Foundation, a non-profit committed to making an immediate impact on increasing the quality of life and survivorship of people with lung cancer by accelerating research into early detection and more effective treatments, as well as providing community, support and education for all those affected by the disease.

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis has also pledged to donate $100 to LUNGevity Foundation in Monica's honor for every home run he hits this season.
