Sandoval done for 2015 due to pneumonia
BOSTON -- Pablo Sandoval's frustrating first season with the Red Sox is over. Due to his recent bout with pneumonia, Sandoval won't play again this season.
"Pablo still has pneumonia," Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo said after Boston's 8-0 win over Baltimore on Saturday. "He's not going to making the trip with us, and it's very doubtful that he'll play again this season."
The Red Sox were excited about the acquisition of Sandoval, signing him to a five-year, $95 million contract.
But as was the case with fellow free agent signee Hanley Ramirez, Sandoval was inconsistent on offense (.245, 10 homers, 47 RBIs) and defense (team-leading 15 errors). Ramirez's season also ended prematurely due to a right shoulder injury.
"I think he's a little disappointed that he can't play and contribute and be with his teammates," Lovullo said. "He's one of the guys. He's with his teammates, wanting to contribute and help this team win games. That's been a pretty consistent thought that he's had all year long. So I know there's a little bit of disappointment."
