Padres acquire OF Manuel Margot and INF Javier Guerra among four players from Boston

Club sends RHP Craig Kimbrel to the Red Sox

The San Diego Padres announced today they have acquired outfielder Manuel Margot, infielders Javier Guerra and Carlos Asuaje and left-handed pitcher Logan Allen from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right-handed pitcher Craig Kimbrel. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement. 

Margot, 21, split the 2015 season between Single-A Salem and Double-A Portland, hitting a combined .276 (121-439) with 27 doubles, nine triples, six home runs, 50 RBI, 73 runs scored and 39 stolen bases in 110 games, playing primarily in center field. The outfielder also was named to the international team of the 2015 Futures Game. A native of the Dominican Republic, he was originally signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in July 2011. Over parts of four minor league seasons (2012-15) in the Red Sox organization he has hit .282 (368-1304) with 70 doubles, 23 triples, 23 home runs, 175 RBI, 216 runs scored and 132 stolen bases in 342 games played, playing almost exclusively in center field.

Guerra, 20, spent the entire 2015 season with Single-A Greenville, hitting .279 (121-434) with 23 doubles, three triples, 15 home runs, 68 RBI, 64 runs scored and seven stolen bases in 116 games, primarily playing shortstop. The left-handed hitter was named a South Atlantic League Mid-Season All-Star in 2015. A native of Panama, he originally signed with the Red Sox as an international free agent in July 2012. Over parts of three professional seasons (2013-15) in the Red Sox organization he has hit .269 (227-845) with 46 doubles, seven triples, 17 home runs, 117 RBI, 112 runs scored and 15 stolen bases in 227 games, playing almost exclusively at shortstop.

Asuaje, 24, spent the entire 2015 season with Double-A Portland, hitting .251 (124-495) with 23 doubles, seven triples, eight home runs, 61 RBI, 60 runs scored and nine stolen bases in 131 games for the Sea Dogs, primarily playing second base. The left-handed hitter was named an Eastern League Mid-Season All-Star in 2015. He originally signed with the Red Sox as an 11th-round selection in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. Over parts of three minor league seasons in the Red Sox organization (2013-15) he has hit .278 (319-1146) with 73 doubles, 20 triples, 24 home runs, 182 RBI and 165 runs scored in 312 games, seeing time defensively at second base, third base, shortstop and left field.

Allen, 18, made his professional debut for the Red Sox in 2015 after signing as an eighth-round selection in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft. Over eight starts between the Red Sox Rookie-Level affiliate and Single-A Lowell, he posted a 1.11 ERA (3 ER, 24.1 IP) with 26 strikeouts against one walk and just 18 hits allowed. The Palm Beach, FL native attended IMG Academy and committed to the University of South Carolina prior to signing with the Red Sox.

Kimbrel, 27, went 4-2 with a 2.58 ERA (17 ER, 59.1 IP), 39 saves in 43 chances and 87 strikeouts against 22 walks in 61 relief appearances for the Padres in 2015. He was acquired by the Padres from the Braves on April 5, 2015 prior to the start of the season in a six-player trade. Originally signed by the Braves as a third-round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, the right-hander has gone 19-12 with a 1.63 ERA (63 ER, 348.1 IP), 225 saves in 248 chances and 563 strikeouts against 130 walks in 355 relief appearances over parts of six Major League seasons with the Braves (2010-14) and Padres (2015).
