Padres acquire OF Matt Kemp, C Tim Federowicz and cash considerations in five-player trade with Los Angeles Dodgers

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have acquired outfielder Matt Kemp, catcher Tim Federowicz and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for catcher Yasmani Grandal and right-handed pitchers Joe Wieland and Zach Eflin. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.

Kemp, 30, hit .287 with 38 doubles, three triples, 25 home runs and 89 RBI in 150 games for the Dodgers in 2014. The right-handed hitter is a two-time National League All-Star (2011-12), a two-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner (2009, 2011) and a two-time Louisville Silver Slugger recipient (2009, 2011). He owns a lifetime .292 batting average, .349 on-base percentage and .495 slugging percentage to go along with 215 doubles, 33 triples, 182 home runs, 648 RBI and 170 stolen bases in 1,116 games over parts of nine Major League seasons (2006-14), all with Los Angeles. Among National League outfielders since he made his Major League debut in 2006, Kemp ranks fifth in RBI (640), sixth in batting average (.294), sixth in home runs (163), seventh in slugging (.497) and eighth in OPS (.848). Signed as a sixth-round selection by the Dodgers in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, Kemp owns the highest batting average (.322), on-base percentage (.372) and slugging percentage (.495) of any player with at least 200 plate appearances at Petco Park while his 34 RBI in downtown San Diego are the second-most ever by a visiting player.

Federowicz, 27, pronounced fehd-er-oh-VICH, played in 23 Major League games for the Dodgers last season and 78 games for Triple-A Albuquerque, hitting .328 (98-for-299) with 26 doubles, 14 home runs, 48 RBI and 51 runs scored for the Isotopes. Originally signed by the Boston Red Sox as a seventh-round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, he has played in parts of four Major League seasons with the Dodgers (2011-14). Defensively, Federowicz has posted a 66.7 stolen base percentage, the sixth-best number among all National League catchers to have appeared in 75-or-more games since he entered the league in 2011. The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill product was twice named the best defensive catcher in the Boston Red Sox organization by Baseball America (2009-10). Acquired by the Dodgers on July 31, 2011 as part of a three-team trade with the Seattle Mariners and Red Sox, he has hit .293 (633-for-2159) with 167 doubles, three triples, 66 home runs, 352 RBI and 318 runs scored in 580 games played over parts of seven minor league seasons.

Grandal, 26, hit .225 with 19 doubles, one triple, 15 home runs and 49 RBI in a career-high 128 games in 2014. The Havana, Cuba, native owns a lifetime .245 batting average in 216 career games over parts of three Major League seasons (2012-14) with the Padres. The switch-hitting backstop was originally signed by the Cincinnati Reds as a first-round selection (12^th overall) in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft and acquired by the Padres in five-player trade with the Reds after the 2011 season.

Wieland, 24, appeared in four games, two starts, for the Padres in 2014, going 1-0 with a 7.15 ERA (9 ER, 11.1 IP) and 32 strikeouts against 14 walks. The Reno, Nevada, native owns a lifetime 1-4 record with a 5.31 ERA and 32 strikeouts against 14 walks in nine games, seven starts, over parts of two Major League seasons (2012 and 2014) with the Padres. Originally signed by the Texas Rangers as a fourth-round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, he was acquired by the Padres on July 31, 2011 in a three-player trade.

Eflin, 20, pitched to a 10-7 record with a 3.80 ERA (54 ER, 128.0 IP) and 93 strikeouts against 31 walks in 24 starts for Single-A Lake Elsinore in 2014. Originally selected by the Padres in the first-round (33rd overall) of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, he has gone 17-14 with a 3.41 ERA and 183 strikeouts against 65 walks in 50 games, 49 starts, over parts of three minor league seasons.
