Padres agree to terms with OF Carlos Quentin on contract extension through 2015 season
Contract extension comes with a mutual option for 2016 season
The San Diego Padres today announced they have agreed to terms with outfielder Carlos Quentin on a contract extension through the 2015 season with a mutual option for the 2016 season. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.
Quentin, 29, has hit .273 (38-for-139) with eight doubles, nine home runs, 22 RBI and 20 runs scored in 40 games for the Padres this year. The two-time American League All-Star was acquired this past offseason on December 31 in a three-player trade with the Chicago White Sox.
“We are very pleased to extend Carlos’ contract,” said Byrnes. “He provides a real threat in the middle of our lineup and brings an intensity and edge to our club. As a San Diegan, he is very invested in the success of the Padres.”
Originally selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round (29th overall) of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, he has hit .253 (567-for-2239) with 133 doubles, six triples, 130 home runs, 405 RBI, 341 runs scored, 233 walks, a .348 on-base percentage and .492 slugging percentage in 656 games played across seven Major League seasons with the Diamondbacks (2006-07), White Sox (2008-11) and Padres (2012).
A native of Bellflower, Calif., Quentin was a three-sport standout at the University of San Diego High after attending Saint Pius X Elementary School in Chula Vista. He was named San Diego’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2000. While at Stanford University he garnered All-Pac 10 honors three seasons, leading the Cardinal to the College World Series three times and was also one of five finalists for the Golden Spikes Award during his last collegiate campaign in 2003.
