Cabrera misses finale after birth of daughter

SAN DIEGO -- Shortstop Everth Cabrera was absent from the Padres' clubhouse and the lineup on Sunday, but for a good reason -- and an especially appropriate one on Mother's Day.

Cabrera and his wife, Connie, welcomed their second child -- a baby girl named Erika -- late Saturday night. Manager Bud Black said the couple and new baby were doing well, and that the team was trying to get in touch with Cabrera.

Black joked that he wanted to see if Cabrera could still head to the ballpark on Sunday in case the Padres needed him to play.

"Everything is going great," Black said. "We are trying as we speak to get a hold of Cabby and see what's going on, see if he can break away for a couple of hours and put the uni on and then maybe go back."

Cabrera joins a number of other Padres players who have recently welcomed new babies into the world. The list includes Jedd Gyorko, Dale Thayer, Chris Denorfia, Seth Smith, Chase Headley and Josh Johnson. Black again joked about the number of recent births on the team all happening around the same timeframe.

"Something happened, you know I've got to do the calendar math, but something happened like last August or September," Black said. "Something happened there for all those boys."
