Murphy ejected during series opener in DC
WASHINGTON -- Padres interim manager Pat Murphy was ejected from Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Nationals during the seventh inning at Nationals Park. With the Padres trailing, 8-3, Murphy was tossed by home-plate umpire David Rackley, then came out on the field to argue before pinch-hitter Melvin Upton Jr. came to the plate.
It's not apparent why Murphy was ejected, though he argued with umpires on the field during the bottom of the sixth inning after Bryce Harper was ruled to have fouled off a pitch that missed his foot and should have been a fair ball. The Nationals eventually scored four runs in the inning on Ryan Zimmerman's grand slam for an 8-2 lead.
It was the fourth ejection for Murphy, who was named interim manager on June 16.
