Padres name Minor League Players of the Month

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres have named their Minor League Players of the Month for April.

Lake Elsinore first baseman Lee Orr was named the Hitter of the Month after batting .378 in 22 games in April. He led the California League in hitting and hit safely in all but four games. Orr had a nine-game hit streak in April when he hit .469. Orr was selected in the 13th round in 2011 out of McNeese State.

Right-handed pitcher Burch Smith was named the Pitcher of the Month after going 1-2 with a 1.38 ERA in five starts for Double-A San Antonio. Smith limited hitters to a .163 batting average and struck out 31 over 26 innings. Smith was a 14th-round pick in the 2011 Draft out of the University of Oklahoma.

Lake Elsinore second baseman Cory Spangenberg was named the Baserunner of the Month after he was successful on 13 of 14 attempts in 21 games. Spangenberg was the 10th overall pick in 2011 out of Indian River Community College in Florida.

Fort Wayne first baseman Luis Tejada was named the Defensive Player of the Month after compiling a .991 fielding percentage with two errors in 214 total chances. Tejada was signed as a non-drafted free agent on Jan. 16, 2010.
