Padres place LHP Joe Thatcher on 15-Day DL and recall RHP Brad Boxberger from Triple-A Tucson

The San Diego Padres today announced they have placed left-handed pitcher Joe Thatcher on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 26, with right knee tendonitis and have recalled right-handed pitcher Brad Boxberger from Triple-A Tucson. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Thatcher, 30, has gone 0-4 with a 3.42 ERA (10 ER/26.1 IP) and 28 strikeouts against 10 walks over 40 relief outings for the Padres this season.  The left-hander has made 12 appearances this year facing just one batter. He collected his first career save on July 2 against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field this season. Over parts of six Major League seasons (2007-12), all with the Padres, he is 4-10 with a 3.37 ERA (61 ER/163.0 IP) and 170 strikeouts against 61 walks in 222 relief outings.

Boxberger, 24, has gone 2-2 with a 3.03 ERA (13 ER/38.2 IP), five saves and 55 strikeouts against 19 walks over 34 relief outings for Triple-A Tucson.  The right-hander makes his second stint with San Diego this season.  He was previously selected from Tucson on June 10 and made his Major League debut that day against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park before being optioned back to Tucson on June 26.  In five outings for San Diego he posted a 1.42 ERA (1 ER/6.1 IP) with eight strikeouts against seven walks. Boxberger was acquired by the Padres from the Cincinnati Reds along with right-hander Edinson Volquez, infielder Yonder Alonso and catcher Yasmani Grandal this past offseason as part of a five-player trade in exchange for right-hander Mat Latos.
