Padres reach deals with Cabrera, Kennedy, Ross

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres avoided arbitration with three players on Thursday -- shortstop Everth Cabrera, and pitchers Ian Kennedy and Tyson Ross.

Cabrera, the Padres' lone All-Star in 2013, will make $2.45 million. Kennedy, acquired from the D-backs on July 31, will make $6.1 million, with Ross to earn $1.98 million.

The Padres' remaining arbitration-eligible players are pitcher Andrew Cashner, third baseman Chase Headley and outfielder/first baseman Kyle Blanks.

The team previously avoided arbitration with outfielder Seth Smith, and pitchers Tim Stauffer and Eric Stults.

Cabrera had a breakout season offensively in 2013 despite being suspended for the final 50 games of the regular season after being linked to Biogenesis. He hit .283, with a career-high 108 hits and 37 steals.

Kennedy went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA in 10 starts for the Padres after he was acquired in exchange for pitchers Joe Thatcher and Matt Stites.

Ross went 3-8 but had a 3.17 ERA in 35 games, including 16 starts. He and Kennedy will again be a part of the rotation; other candidates include free-agent signee Josh Johnson, Stults, Cashner and a handful of other rotation hopefuls.
