Padres give scouting department a makeover
White to exclusively focus on senior advising duties, DeYoung promoted
SAN DIEGO -- The Padres have made a handful of changes to their professional and amateur scouting departments.
Logan White, who was hired last offseason from the Dodgers to be the team's senior advisor to general manager A.J. Preller and run the team's pro scouting department, will devote his focus to his senior advising duties and amateur and international scouting as well.
Pete DeYoung, formerly the team's West Coast regional scouting supervisor, is the team's director of professional scouting.
Replacing DeYoung is Josh Emmerick, who was formerly the Padres' area scout in Southern California, Nevada and Hawaii. Emmerick signed current Padres catcher Austin Hedges in 2011, among other players.
Chris Kelly is now an amateur cross-checker for the team after serving as an area scout in southern Georgia and western and northern Florida. Kelly signed two notable players from the 2015 Draft: third-round pitcher Jacob Nix and 15th-round first baseman Brad Zunica.
Ryley Westman, who was the organization's catching coordinator, has been promoted to coordinator of instruction, where he will expand his current role to include working with the Minor League field coordinator on the instruction portion of player development.
The Padres have also hired Shaun Cole, who most recently served as director of the 18U National Team for Team USA, as coordinator of player development.
Other department changes include the departures of former big league catcher Brett Mayne, who was an area scout for the Padres in southern and central California. Mayne signed left-handed pitcher Max Fried, the club's 2012 first-round pick. Fried is now with the Braves. Central regional supervisor Tim Holt is joining the pro scouting department.
Dave Lottsfeldt, formerly an area scout in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah, has also left the organization.
