Peavy ends Spring Training with strong outing

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- It was an eventful Spring Training for Jake Peavy, who was limited to just three Grapefruit League starts. The right-hander was delayed early in camp by irritation on his right middle finger and then an accident with a fishing knife on March 1 left him with a gash on his left index finger.

Still, manager John Farrell was pleased with Peavy's work this spring. In the Red Sox's 7-4 loss to the Twins in both clubs' Grapefruit League finale Saturday afternoon, the veteran allowed a solo homer, three hits, a walk and notched three strikeouts.

"Even if there wasn't an incident there with the finger, it's been a Spring Training that has been productive," Farrell said. "He made a normal progression. And then in light of the incident, we couldn't be more pleased with the way he came through that particular situation and getting to the appropriate number of pitches thrown in a game."

Peavy was acquired in a three-team deal at last season's non-waiver Trade Deadline and is on schedule to start the Red Sox's home opener April 4 against the Brewers.
