Phillies, fans and Asplundh raise more than $710,000 to strike out ALS

10:52 AM EDT

In honor of MLB's leaguewide Lou Gehrig Day, more than $710,000 was raised at Phillies ALS Awareness Night presented by Asplundh to benefit ALS United Mid-Atlantic, going toward research, care and services for ALS patients.

The amount includes an on-field donation of $415,000 (and growing) made by the event’s sponsor, Asplundh, in honor of its former Chairman of the Board/CEO Scott Asplundh, who passed away in January due to complications from ALS.

As part of the night’s pregame ceremonies, those battling or affected by ALS took the filed as part of the “Lineup of Courage,” with Phillies players lining up alongside these brave patients and families. The night also included a ceremonial first pitch from longtime Asplundh employee Scotty Foster, who is among 39 members of his family diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Fundraising also included grab bags sponsored by Hatfield Quality Meats, special Theme Night tickets, and the Phantastic Auction, with a part of the latter’s proceeds going to the cause.
