Prospect Gueller throws seven-inning shutout

Right-hander Mitch Gueller, rated the Phillies' No. 17 prospect by MLB.com, threw a seven-inning shutout Friday, leading short-season Williamsport to a 2-0 victory against Auburn in Game 1 of a doubleheader.

Gueller struck out five batters and allowed four hits with no walks. Because Minor League doubleheaders are limited to seven innings, he gets credit for the first shutout and second complete game of his career.

With the victory, Gueller improved to 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA in four starts this season. He has struck out 12 batters and walked 11 in 20 innings.

Gueller was a three-sport standout at W.F. West High School in Chehalis, Wash., before the Phillies made him the 54th overall pick of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. He spent his first full professional season in Williamsport, where he went 3-8 with a 5.86 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 58 1/3 innings.

Gueller returned to Williamsport this season as a part of a prospect-laden roster. His teammates include catcher Deivi Grullon and outfielder Cord Sandberg, the Phillies' Nos. 9 and 10 prospects, as well as outfielder Aaron Brown, the club's third-round Draft pick this year.

While Grullon and Sandberg were out of the lineup for the first game, Brown went 1-for-3 with a run in the victory.
