Pirates acquire right-handed pitcher Chad Qualls from Yankees in exchange for Casey McGehee

 

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired right-handed pitcher Chad Qualls from the New York Yankees
in exchange for infielder Casey McGehee and cash considerations. The announcement was
made by Pirates Senior Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.
 
The 33-year-old Qualls went a combined 2-1 with a 4.89 ERA (38.2ip/21er) in 43 relief appearances
this season between the Phillies and Yankees.
 
Qualls has a career record of 40-35 with 51 saves, a 3.85 ERA (581.2ip/249er) and 447 strikeouts
in 580 relief appearances in the big leagues with Houston (2004-07), Arizona (2008-10),
Tampa Bay (2010), San Diego (2011), Philadelphia (2012) and the New York Yankees (2012).
 
Last year with San Diego, Qualls finished eighth among National League relievers in appearances
(77) while leading all Padres relievers in both innings pitched (74.1) and wins (six). He was scored
upon in just 16 of his 77 appearances while also limiting right-handed batters to a .218 average.
Since breaking into the big leagues in 2004 with Houston, Qualls ranks third among all Major
League relievers in appearances (580) behind only Francisco Cordero (608) and Francisco Rodriguez
(590).
