Pirates acquire infielder John McDonald

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired infielder John McDonald from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations. The announcement was made by Senior Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

The 38-year-old McDonald hit .249 (49-for-197) with nine doubles, six home runs, 22 RBI and 16 runs scored in 70 games with the Diamondbacks last season. He also posted a .996 fielding percentage after making one error in 469 total chances in 54 games at shortstop, five at third base and four at second base.

McDonald made his Major League debut with the Indians in 1999 and has a .239 (547-for-2289) career batting average in 954 games between Cleveland (1999-2004), Toronto (2005-11), Detroit (2005) and Arizona (2011-12).

To make room on the 40-man roster for McDonald, the Pirates have placed infielder Chase d'Arnaud (left thumb surgery) on the 60-day disabled list.
