Pirates take Rossiter for second straight year

The Pirates drafted Max Rossiter a year ago, but he opted not to sign and returned to Arizona State for his senior year. Pittsburgh made Rossiter its 15th-round selection Saturday on Day 3 of the First-Year Player Draft, the 449th pick overall.

The 5-foot-10, 184-pound catcher hit .272 for the Sun Devils this season, driving in 26 runs. He threw out 12 runners in 90 stolen-base attempts, appearing in 44 games behind the plate. In 2012, he hit .326 and slugged .449.

Rossiter was drafted by the Pirates in the 32nd round last season, and in the 46th round by the Rays in 2011. He lists Pirates catcher Russell Martin as one of his favorite athletes on his Arizona State profile.
