Free agent O'Day expected to sign soon
Reliever has received interest from several teams
Darren O'Day is arguably the top reliever on this year's free-agent market, and it appears he is nearing a decision on his next contract.
According to a report in the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles have made the setup man a "competitive offer" with hopes of keeping the much sought-after reliever in Baltimore. The O's have maintained contact with O'Day all offseason, and indications are that O'Day could agree to a new contract before the Winter Meetings begin on Monday in Nashville, Tenn.
The 33-year-old has spent the past four seasons with the Orioles and has emerged as one of the top bullpen arms in the game.
O'Day is 31-13 lifetime with a 2.31 ERA. In four years with Baltimore, he is 23-8 with a 1.92 ERA and 12 saves.
The story also lists the Nationals, Braves and Dodgers among the others most interested in O'Day, and it indicates he could receive a four-year deal worth $8 million to $9 million per season due to the thin free-agent market for relief pitchers.
Another factor that could weigh into O'Day's decision is that his wife, Elizabeth Prann, is an anchor/reporter for FOX News who works out of nearby Washington.
