Pitching coach Cooper set to rejoin White Sox

TORONTO -- Pitching coach Don Cooper will rejoin the White Sox in Chicago on Saturday for the delayed start of a homestand that begins with a series against the Twins.

Cooper was hospitalized in the Washington, D.C., area on April 9 with diverticulitis and returned to Chicago on Saturday. Friday's game against the Twins was postponed due to cold and windy conditions.

The team is eager for his return to the dugout, where he spent 11 of his 26 seasons with the organization as pitching coach.

"We are looking forward to having Cooper back," manager Robin Ventura said. "It's odd him not being here. I'm just glad he's feeling better. It's going to be nice to have him back."

During Cooper's absence, bullpen coach Bobby Thigpen filled in as the team's pitching coach, while Curt Hasler, the organization's pitching coordinator, has served as the bullpen coach.

Hasler's last game with the team was Thursday's series finale against the Blue Jays and as much as he has enjoyed his time with the big club, he said it doesn't feel right with Cooper not around.

Ventura agrees, although he's pleased with the job Hasler and Thigpen have done.

"It's different. Bobby has filled in and done a great job," Ventura said. "Again, it's different not having Cooper there -- the conversations you are use to having in the middle of the game. Definitely looking forward to him getting back with us."
