Pomeranz to make first '14 start in nightcap

Leon called up as 26th man, available to pitch in relief in doubleheader

OAKLAND -- The A's will call on lefty Drew Pomeranz to start the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Mariners.

It will mark the first start of the year for Pomeranz, who has been working out of Oakland's bullpen as a long man, having last thrown 56 pitches in Boston on Friday. He's expected to be able to throw around 70 pitches Wednesday.

Pomeranz has allowed just three earned runs -- two via solo homers -- in 13 2/3 innings this year, striking out 11 and walking six. He last started July 22, 2013, with the Rockies and has a 5.40 ERA in 30 career starts.

Right-hander Arnold Leon, called up Wednesday from Triple-A to serve as the club's 26th man on the active roster, was available in relief for both games.
