Blue Jays trade veteran lefty Wolf to Tigers

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays traded veteran left-hander Randy Wolf to the Tigers on Thursday afternoon in exchange for cash considerations.

Wolf went 9-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 23 games for Triple-A Buffalo this season. He was one of the Bisons' top starters, led the club with 106 strikeouts and ranked fourth in the International League with 139 2/3 innings pitched.

Despite the impressive numbers, Wolf didn't receive an opportunity to join the big league club. Toronto instead opted to used a group of pitchers that included Matt Boyd, Scott Copeland and Felix Doubront for spot starts earlier in the year. The squad now has a set group of five.

Wolf recently requested his release, according to a report from CBS Sports. But the Blue Jays found him a suitable landing spot. Detroit presents an ideal situation for Wolf after the club lost starters Anibal Sanchez and Daniel Norris to the disabled list.

Toronto appears to have a lack of depth in the rotation beyond its current starters. Right-hander Drew Hutchison is making a brief appearance in the Minors, but he will be back once the Blue Jays return to a five-man rotation next week. Marcus Stroman could return in September, while the depth options include Copeland, Jeff Francis and Phillippe Aumont.
