Rout puts quite a strain on Rangers' bullpen

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers need to take a brief timeout from trying to trade for the Phillies' Cole Hamels or some other starting pitcher. They could use a couple of moments to figure out how to replenish their depleted bullpen after a 21-5 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday.

The Rangers will almost certainly have to make multiple roster moves before Wednesday's game to get their bullpen back to full strength.

"We'll evaluate it, see where we are and see who is available," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said.

Wandy Rodriguez could be one victim because he couldn't give the Rangers what they needed as a long reliever. Phil Klein might be another because he did give the Rangers three innings in relief. He also pitched two innings on Monday and has thrown 87 pitches over two days. He is going to be down for at least two to three days after falling on his sword for the Rangers.

All of this is because second baseman Rougned Odor broke the wrong way on what could have been a momentum-stopping double-play grounder and Martin Perez could not get anybody out in the second inning. Instead he allowed eight straight batters to reach base and they all ended up scoring even after he was replaced by Rodriguez.

Perez had one chance to stop the Yankees' onslaught. He was still up 5-1 with the bases loaded and nobody out when Brendan Ryan came to the plate. Ryan hit a hard grounder directly at Odor for what should have been a double play. But Odor broke to his right and the ball skipped through right where he was standing. It ended in right-center for a two-run double.

"I just didn't see it," Odor said.

"A young player who has played in the big leagues for a while, it can be a challenge at times," manager Jeff Banister said. "He just lost the ball. It happens."

After that play, Perez was swept away in the Yankees' offensive deluge.

"More than anything else, it was the extended part of the inning after we didn't make the play," Banister said. "There were two to three balls that got through the infield, one floater over the infield and a couple of balls that got hit hard. He probably started to try and do too much as the inning progressed."

The Rangers were hoping Rodriguez could give them a few innings to keep the bullpen from being overused. Rodriguez, who threw 32 pitches in relief on Sunday, did get the Rangers through the second, although he allowed three more runs. But he didn't get anybody out in the third. Instead he gave up a grand slam to Chris Young before exiting.

Rodriguez was 6-4 with a 4.07 ERA in 15 starts before being pushed to the bullpen. The next step may be to designate him for assignment in advance of the non-waiver Trade Deadline on Friday.

The Rangers may have to call up Anthony Ranaudo to serve as long man until they can get Anthony Bass back up here. Bass was optioned on Monday and has to wait 10 days unless there is an injury. The other options at Triple-A include Jon Edwards, Luke Jackson, Roman Mendez and Stolmy Pimentel.
