Rangers claim lefty Cabrera off Rockies' waivers

The Rangers claimed left-handed pitcher Edwar Cabrera off waivers from the Rockies on Wednesday and added him to the 60-day disabled list.

Cabrera also was on the 60-day DL with the Rockies after having a left shoulder injury that sidelined him for the entire 2013 season. He had surgery on the shoulder on July 10.

Cabrera, who turns 26 on Sunday, made his only two Major League appearances in 2012, when he started two games for the Rockies. He lost both, giving up nine runs (seven earned) over 5 2/3 innings.

The Dominican Republic native spent five years in the Rockies' Minor League system, going 26-21 with a 3.13 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and a 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 94 games, including 78 starts. He advanced to Triple-A Colorado Springs in 2012, posting a 3.41 ERA over six starts there.

The Rangers, whose 40-man roster is full, now have three pitchers -- Cabrera, Matt Harrison and Colby Lewis -- on the 60-day DL.
