Hamilton continues to progress in Arizona

ARLINGTON -- Josh Hamilton took live batting practice and shagged balls in the outfield at the Rangers' spring training facility in Surprise, Ariz. on Saturday. A five-time All-Star with the Rangers from 2008-12, the recently acquired Hamilton is currently on the 15-day disabled list as he continues to recover from right shoulder surgery.

Hamilton took live batting practice off right-hander Kohsuke Tomita and left-hander Matt Harrison, who is working to return from spinal fusion surgery he underwent last June. General manager Jon Daniels said when Hamilton was acquired from the Angels on April 27 that he hoped Hamilton would make his season debut in mid to late May.

Hamilton is scheduled to play in an extended spring training game against the Royals on Monday. He is expected to play three innings and have four at-bats in the game.

Worth noting

• Outfielder Alex Hassan was claimed on waivers by the A's on Saturday. Hassan, who the Rangers acquired on April 9, was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Wednesday. He batted .267 with five doubles and eight RBIs in 16 games with Triple-A Round Rock.

• Friday's 7-5 loss to the A's marked the first time the Rangers had ever allowed seven or more runs after holding their opponent scoreless through the first seven innings of a game, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Colby Lewis became just the fourth Rangers starting pitcher to throw at least six scoreless innings while receiving at least three runs of support and not be credited with the win, according to STATS Inc. He joined Kevin Millwood, Kameron Loe and Nolan Ryan. Lewis struck out eight in the defeat, with the bullpen fanning one, leaving the Rangers as the only team in the majors without a 10-strikeout game this season.
