No. 4 prospect flirts with no-hitter vs. Frederick

Right-hander Alex Gonzalez, rated the Rangers' No. 6 prospect by MLB.com, took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Tuesday. Though a single by Michael Burgess ended the bid, Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach went on to defeat Frederick, 3-1.

Gonzalez allowed a run on one hit and three walks in seven innings. He struck out four batters and threw 90 pitches.

Right-hander Jose Leclerc relieved Gonzalez to start the eighth inning. He threw two innings to complete the one-hitter and earn his sixth save of the season.

With Tuesday's victory, Gonzalez has won his past five starts. During that streak, he has a 1.30 ERA and is holding opponents to a .145 batting average.

The Rangers selected Gonzalez 23rd overall in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. Nine starts into his first full professional season, he has a 2.28 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. He has struck out 41 batters and walked 13 in 55 1/3 innings.

Myrtle Beach's offense gave Gonzalez just enough support Tuesday. Catcher Jorge Alfaro, the Rangers' No. 1 prospect and No. 32 overall, went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Third baseman Joey Gallo, the Rangers' No. 4 prospect and No. 80 overall, went 1-for-3 with a walk and a double.
