Southpaw Thompson picked in 12th round

The Rangers took left-handed pitcher Derek Thompson with the 370th overall selection in the 12th round.

Thompson is the first left-handed pitcher selected by the Rangers in the Draft. He's listed at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds. He attended John A. Logan College in Illinois.

Thompson went 8-3 with a 2.37 ERA in 13 starts. Three of his four complete games were shutouts. He struck out 118, with 12.16 strikeouts per game, and allowed 30 walks.
