Rangers trade Choice to Tribe for cash considerations

DETROIT -- The Rangers traded Michael Choice, an Arlington native and former first-round Draft pick, to the Indians for cash considerations, the club announced Friday.

The outfielder appeared in only one game with Texas this year and had struggled at Triple-A Round Rock, where he slashed .244/.309/.399 over 110 games. To make room on the 40-man roster, Choice was designated for assignment on Tuesday when the Rangers acquired Will Venable from the Padres.

Choice was the 10th overall pick by the Athletics in the 2010 MLB Draft and made his big league debut in 2013. That winter, he was dealt to his hometown club as part of a four-player trade that sent outfielder Craig Gentry and pitcher Josh Lindblom to Oakland.

In 86 games with the Rangers last year, Choice batted .182 with just 16 extra-base hits. He didn't make Texas' Opening Day roster this spring and on June 24, struck out in his only Major League plate appearance this season.

Choice has played at every outfield position in the Majors, with the majority of his time (43 games) spent in left field.

He has been optioned by the Indians to Triple-A Columbus.
