Rays acquire reliever Cedeno, move Jaso to 60-day DL

NEW YORK -- The Rays acquired left-hander Xavier Cedeno from the Dodgers for cash considerations on Monday.

Cedeno has experienced a whirlwind of activity in the past week. On Wednesday, the Nationals traded Cedeno to the Dodgers for cash considerations. On Friday, the Dodgers designated him for assignment. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, the Rays placed catcher John Jaso on the 60-day disabled list.

"[Cedeno] hasn't thrown in a while," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "I'm sure he's got to go through all the physicals and get checked out. But we're excited ... a left-handed reliever will definitely be helpful."

Cedeno has an 0-1 record and a 5.24 career ERA in 77 appearances in the Major Leagues, but he didn't pitch for the Dodgers after being acquired from Washington. He posted a 6.00 ERA in five appearances with the Nationals this season before being sold to the Dodgers.

A 25-man roster move will have to be made once Cedeno joins the team later this week.

Jaso, a career .259 hitter with a .359 on-base percentage, had just one plate appearance this season and walked before injuring himself. Jaso suffered a left-wrist contusion on Opening Day and was placed on the 15-day disabled list, and now that he's on the 60-day DL, he can't be activated until early June.

Cash said the Rays were being "realistic about what [Jaso has] been doing."

"He's still limited," Cash said. "Hopefully he's ready to go right when that day comes up [that he's eligible to come off the DL]. But the injury he had was a pretty significant one. Weren't any bones broken or anything like that. But the wrist area is so important to what he does or any hitter does."
