Odorizzi day to day with left-oblique tightness

SEATTLE -- The Rays are in a holding pattern where Jake Odorizzi's status is concerned.

The right-hander left Friday night's start after 4 1/3 innings when he felt pain in his left side, which has been diagnosed as left-oblique tightness.

"We don't really know what it is," Odorizzi said. "Just taking it -- as boring as it sounds -- day by day. Just see how I feel each day coming in."

Odorizzi has not had an MRI, nor have the Rays made any decision regarding him missing a start or starts or going on the disabled list. The only sure thing at this point is that Odorizzi will see a doctor in St. Petersburg on Monday.

"I feel all right," Odorizzi said. "It's not like I can't move and I'm locked up. I've coughed and sneezed and it really doesn't hurt to do that. Sometimes abdominal stuff hurts when that happens. I guess it will be whatever the doctor has to say."

Rays manager Kevin Cash noted that "we have to be smart with him."

"The last thing we want to do is get him out there and test it and then something more, or worse, happens," Cash said.

Historically, the Rays have never been an aggressive team when it comes to getting players back on the field following injuries. Given that history, Cash was asked if he thought Odorizzi would end up missing some time.

"I would think that's fair," Cash said. "I don't think we're ready to totally commit to that yet. Let's wait and see what the doctors say and we'll probably have more."
