Rays recall Andriese to bolster bullpen

HOUSTON -- Right-hander Matt Andriese was recalled from Triple-A Durham by the Rays following Tuesday night's 3-2 loss to the Astros, thereby beginning his fifth stint with the Rays this season. Andriese pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief Wednesday night and took the loss in the Astros' 3-2, walk-off win.

"It's been a roller coaster for sure," said Andriese about his season. "But I'm glad to be back and helping this team win. You know, I got my work in down in Durham. ... Just worked on little stuff and I'm ready to compete up here."

Rays manager Kevin Cash allowed that there was "kind of a need out of the bullpen."

"Matt will come back up and provide some length for us," Cash said. "To Matt's credit, he's done a tremendous job this year. Continues to improve. The reports from Triple-A have been outstanding. I know they've come as a starting pitcher, but he's shown the versatility to get loose and adjust to that bullpen role."

Enny Romero was optioned to Durham to make room for Andriese, who is 3-3 with a 2.35 ERA in 13 appearances (12 starts) for Durham. He is 3-2 with a 3.11 ERA in 12 games (seven starts) for the Rays this season.

Andriese said he has felt good.

"I feel nice and fresh," Andriese said. "Usually by this time in past years I have like 140 innings or whatever, usually don't miss starts. So I'm a little more fresh this year."
