Sox claim Machi, transfer Buchholz to 60-day DL

BOSTON -- The Red Sox, in need of some bullpen depth, claimed right-hander Jean Machi off waivers from the Giants on Tuesday. To make room for Machi on the 40-man roster, the club transferred right-hander Clay Buchholz to the 60-day disabled list.

Buchholz has been out with a strained right flexor muscle since July 11, and the earliest he can pitch for Boston again is Sept. 9.

The 33-year-old Machi had been a solid reliever for San Francisco in 2013-14, but he struggled this season, posting a 5.14 ERA in 33 games before being designated for assignment.
