Red Sox DL Hembree, call up Shaw

Reliever dealing with right shoulder inflammation

ATLANTA -- Reliever Heath Hembree couldn't get loose during Wednesday's game, and he was placed on the disabled list on Thursday with right shoulder inflammation. Infielder Travis Shaw was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to take his place, and he made the start at third base.

The one-game benching of Pablo Sandoval for violating the club's social media policy created the opportunity for Shaw to be in the lineup.

Primarily a first baseman coming through the farm system, Shaw has expanded his versatility by playing more third base this year.

"He's a guy that's got good athleticism, has good hands, has played a little over 50 percent of the games at third base while in Pawtucket, and he's handled it pretty routinely from all the reports that I have," said Red Sox manager John Farrell.

Shaw his hitting .259 with five homers and 26 RBIs for Pawtucket this season.
