Farrell unsuccessful in first replay challenge
Red Sox manager disagrees with umps' call on Bradley, but play stands
BOSTON -- And during the sixth game, it happened. Red Sox manager John Farrell challenged a play for the first time Sunday afternoon, but after the umpires went to the replay, they ruled that the call on the field -- that Jackie Bradley Jr. was out at first base -- stood.
With one out and runners on first and second base in the second inning, Bradley hit a sharp grounder that Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks initially booted. Weeks recovered and threw to first to nip Bradley. Farrell hopped out of the dugout almost immediately.
After a brief conversation between Farrell and first-base umpire Tim Timmons, the umpires went to the review.
"Bang-bang play at first base. To the naked eye in the dugout, I thought Jackie beat the ball out," Farrell said. "But rather than us be [in] a second-and-third situation with two outs, I thought it was a worthy situation to challenge it. Unfortunately, it wasn't overturned."
The challenge took one minute, 38 seconds.
