Red Sox Open 2014 Season on 3/31 in Baltimore; Home Opener 4/4 vs. NL's Brewers

Home schedule includes Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and Atlanta Braves; New York Yankees visit in April, August, and a season-ending September weekend

BOSTON, MA - The Red Sox will open their 2014 regular season Monday, March 31, in Baltimore, and will host their 114th Opening Day, Friday, April 4, against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Red Sox, in conjunction with Major League Baseball, announced their regular season schedule today.

The club will open on the road for the fourth straight year. They last opened in Baltimore in 2004. This season will be the 11th season opener against the modern-day Orioles. (Boston also opened the 1902 season against the Orioles, who shortly thereafter moved to New York and became today's Yankees.)

The Red Sox have opened their home season against the Brewers only once before - in 1975, en route to the American League Championship.

The Red Sox are scheduled to play 76 of their 162 games versus their American League East rivals, 19 each with Baltimore, New York, Tampa Bay, and Toronto.

In Interleague Play, the Red Sox will face teams from the National League Central. They will also play the Atlanta Braves, considered the Red Sox' "natural rival." In addition to a visit from the National League's Brewers (April 4-6) to start the season, the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and Braves will also visit Fenway Park.

Each team will play 20 Interleague games, including Red Sox road trips to Atlanta, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh.

Boston plays four straight games against Atlanta in two cities May 26-29, the first two at Turner Field and the second pair at Fenway Park. The Cincinnati Reds visit May 6-7, and the Chicago Cubs play a 3-game series at Fenway Park June 30 through July 2.

The New York Yankees visit Fenway Park three times, starting with a mid-week series April 22-24. The rivals return the first weekend in August (1-3) and then conclude the regular season at Fenway September 26-28.

The Tampa Bay Rays will bunch six games at Fenway before June 1, then not return until the penultimate series, September 23-25.

The Orioles visit on Patriots Day Weekend and Independence Day Weekend. Their third visit is a mid-week series September 8-10. The Red Sox are on the road Mother's Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. They are home on Father's Day, the conclusion of a four-game series against the Cleveland Indians (June 12-15).

The Toronto Blue Jays arrive for a pair of mid-week series (May 20-22 and July 28-30) before returning for a September weekend (5-7).

The Texas Rangers lead the charge of American League West teams, arriving during Opening Week (April 7-9). The Oakland A's visit the first weekend of May (2-4), but the three remaining foes wait till August, when they all play in the Red Sox' longest homestand of the year, 11 games against the Houston Astros, August 14-17; Los Angeles Angels, 18-21; and the Seattle Mariners, 22-24.

The Red Sox play more games at Yankee Stadium and at the Rogers Centre (10 each) than they do in any other road venue. Following the first match-up in New York April 10-13, the Red Sox visit Yankee Stadium June 27-29 and September 2-4.
