Travis among prospects heading to AFL

BOSTON -- Six Red Sox prospects will represent the organization in the 2015 Arizona Fall League as members of the Scottsdale Scorpions.

Boston's squad of Minor Leaguers includes three players from Double-A Portland (first baseman Sam Travis, second baseman Carlos Asuaje and right-hander Kyle Martin) and three more from Class A Advanced Salem (infielder Tzu-Wei Lin and righties Chandler Shepherd and Aaron Wilkerson).

Travis, rated as the club's No. 12 prospect by MLB.com, has been one of the hottest hitters in the Red Sox's farm system this season. The 22-year-old slugger batted .313 with five homers and 40 RBIs in 66 games with Salem, and he then went on to slash .294/.366/.429 in 61 games since his promotion to Portland. A second-round Draft pick who helped lead Indiana to the College World Series in 2013, Travis possesses a right-handed power bat and exhibits a patient, well-rounded approach at the plate.

Wilkerson, 26, also made the jump to Double-A this season after going 7-2 with a 2.96 ERA in 17 appearances (12 starts) for Salem. He averaged 9.68 strikeouts per nine innings, issued only 2.39 walks per nine and did not surrender any home runs during that time.

Lin, a 21-year-old Taiwanese shortstop, will compete as a taxi squad member, meaning he can only play on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Additionally, the Red Sox have two more spots on the Scottsdale roster available to them. They have yet to select those players.

Salem pitching coach Paul Abbott will serve as the Scorpions' pitching coach. This year's Fall League competition will begin on Oct. 13 and culminate in a championship game between the East and West division winners in Scottsdale on Nov. 21.
