Red Sox select left-handed pitcher Trey Ball with first pick (7th overall) in 2013 First-Year Player Draft

BOSTON, MA-The Boston Red Sox tonight selected left-handed pitcher Trey Ball out of New Castle Chrysler High School in Indiana with their first-round pick (7^th overall) in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. The club took right-handed pitcher Teddy Stankiewicz from Seminole State College in Oklahoma with their second round selection (45^th overall). Red Sox Director of Amateur Scouting Amiel Sawdaye made the announcement.

Ball, 18, was the No. 1 draft eligible left-handed pitcher according to Baseball America. The 6-foot-5, 175-pound hurler was recently named the Gatorade Indiana Baseball Player of the Year after going 6-0 with a 0.76 ERA, 93 strikeouts, and just 13 walks to help New Castle to a school-record 22 wins and its first ever outright North Central Conference Championship. A left-handed hitter, he also appeared as an outfielder for the Trojans and batted .329 with nine home runs and 20 stolen bases in 21 attempts during the regular season. He hit his 10^th home run of the season in New Castle's Class 4A sectional semifinal game. Last summer, he played in the East Coast Pro Showcase and the Area Code Games. He was also selected to participate in the Under Armour All-American Game and both hit and pitched in the Perfect Game All-American Classic. The recent New Castle graduate was named an Aflac All-American and an Under Armour All-American as a junior in 2012.

"We viewed Trey as one of the most complete players available in this year's draft," said Sawdaye. "His size, athleticism, competitiveness, and makeup made him attractive to the Red Sox as we watched his outstanding performance as both a pitcher and an outfielder. We were thrilled that such a talented player was available to us, and believe that Trey will excel professionally as a left-handed pitcher."

Stankiewicz, 19, went 4-5 with a 2.52 ERA (17 ER) with 70 strikeouts and only 10 walks allowed in 60.2 innings over 11 appearances (nine starts) for Seminole State this season. A native of Keller, TX, he helped the Trojan pitching staff to 476 strikeouts, most in the country. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound right-hander enjoyed a standout senior campaign at Fort Worth Christian High School in 2012, posting a 12-2 record and a 1.35 ERA with 135 strikeouts. He was selected by the New York Mets in the second round of last year's June Draft but elected to attend Junior College.
