Shaw out of winter ball with shoulder issue

Red Sox prospect Moncada slowed by hand injury

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Red Sox had to pull Travis Shaw out of winter ball in Puerto Rico due to a right shoulder impingement. The plan was for Shaw to play roughly a month at third base so he could gain more comfort there. But Shaw was able to play just one game in Puerto Rico.

"Basically when he started throwing down there, it was bothering him and it didn't feel good right away," said Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. "So we brought him back and got him checked out by the doctor and he said it's nothing major. An impingement that therapy and in a couple weeks it should be fine.

Shaw, who is a first baseman by trade and is gaining more comfort at third base to become more versatile, was supposed to be in Puerto Rico until Thanksgiving. The timing of his injury means there won't be time for him to go back.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox don't believe Yoan Moncada will be able to play this winter, either. The prized Cuban free agent the Sox signed back in February suffered a bone bruise to his right hand during instructional league.

"He's still waiting for his hand to be a hundred percent," said Dombrowski. "He's getting close to that, but I think it's also getting close to that situation where by the time he starts building up to get ready to play ball, it may be difficult. It's more of an outside shot at this point, and we're not really counting on him playing."
