Red Sox wear 'Boston' on their home whites

BOSTON -- The Red Sox proudly took the field on Saturday afternoon against the Royals wearing specially-designed jerseys that had "Boston" stitched on the front.

For most of the team's history, the home jerseys have said "Red Sox," but this was a different day.

This was the first baseball game at Fenway Park since the tragic bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday, and it was less than 24 hours from when police heroically captured the second bomber in Watertown, Mass.

It was a day packed with emotion, unique from any other in Red Sox history.

"It's amazing. It means everything," right fielder Shane Victorino said of the "Boston" home white jersey. "I can sit here all day long and talk about how emotional today is going to be or how special it is. To understand that when you take the field, it's about us as a team, but it's [more] about the city of Boston and what we're going to take the field for, and that's for them.

"Win, lose or draw, to bring the emotions, to bring everybody here today and to be part of the healing process is a special time."

The Red Sox will auction off the special jerseys, with all proceeds going to the One Fund Boston, which will help the people most affected by Monday's tragic events.
