Rockies like look of ninth-rounder Rohrbach

DENVER -- Long Beach State right-handed pitcher Andrew Rohrbach has credits as a part-time model for Abercrombie & Fitch, but the Rockies -- who selected him in the ninth round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft on Friday -- are more interested in his developing pitching portfolio.

Rohrbach, from Simi Valley (Calif.) High School, struggled to hit as a shortstop at two-year College of the Canyons. When he tried out as a pitcher, he suffered an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.

But by this past March, Rohrbach, a redshirt sophomore, was Long Beach State's Friday starter. He went 7-2 with a 2.05 ERA in 16 starts covering 109 2/3 innings. He struck out 69 and walked 20 and was named Gainesville Region All-Tournament.
