Rockies sign third-round Draft pick Medina

DENVER -- The Rockies signed third-round Draft pick Javier Medina, a right-handed pitcher from Tucson, Ariz., to a $740,000 bonus, and announced 30 of their signings Friday.

Medina, 18, received most of his scouting attention during showcase events last summer. He went to Sahuaro High School, but was eligible for just part of his senior season because of on-again, off-again rulings by the Arizona high school governing body. After being ruled ineligible during his senior year, his school allowed him to practice and through his legal guardians and his coaches he threw simulated games and bullpens for scouts.

MLB.com also learned that third baseman Tyler Nevin, the 38th overall pick out of Poway (Calif.), signed on Thursday and received a $2 million bonus -- $373,500 above the value of the pick under the Major League Baseball slotting system.

Other players from the top 10 rounds who have signed and their known bonuses (some previously reported) are:

Lake Mary (Fla.) shortstop Brendan Rodgers (1st round, 3rd overall), $5.5 million; Stroudsburg (Pa.) right-handed pitcher Mike Nikorak (1st round, 27th overall), $2.3 million; University of Texas right-handed pitcher Parker French (5th), $100,000; University of South Carolina right-handed pitcher Jack Wynkoop (6th), $289,900; Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo first baseman Brian Mundell (7th), $185,000; Loyola Marymount right-handed pitcher Colin Welmon (8th), $30,000; and Fort Collins (Colo.) Rocky Mountain High School outfielder Cole Anderson (10th), $150,000.

Additionally, the Rockies have signed their 11th-rounder, left-hander Michael Zimmerman from Gulf Coast (Fla.) High School for $200,000. Zimmerman, who had thrown a perfect game and two other no-hitters, had committed to the University of Florida.

All of the other signed players so far are college draftees. They are:

Right-handed reliever Justin Lawrence (12th), Daytona (Fla.) State; shortstop Mylz Jones (13th), Cal State Bakersfield; right-handed reliever Sam Thoele (14th), Arkansas-Little Rock; outfielder Sam Hilliard (15th), Wichita State; right-handed starter Ryan McCormick (16th), St. John's; first baseman Collin Ferguson (17th), St. Mary's College Santa Cruz (Ca.); third baseman Chris Keck (18th), UCLA; left-handed starter Daniel Koger (19th), Alabama-Huntsville; outfielder Bobby Stahel (20th), Southern Cal; right-handed reliever Logan Cozart (21st), Ohio; center fielder Eric Toole (22nd), Ohio; catcher Steven Leonard (23rd), Campbell; right-handed starter James McMahon (24th), Southern Mississippi; shortstop Scott Burcham (25th), Sacramento State; right-handed starter Dransen Johnson (26th), Illinois; catcher Stephen Wear (27th), UC Santa Barbara; shortstop Tyler Follis (28th), North Dakota; right-handed reliever William Jones (29th), Valdosta State; right-handed reliever Matt Meier (30th), Lindenwood (Mo.); center fielder Parker Jensen (32nd), Northern Colorado.
