Rox to contact external managerial candidates
No timetable has been established yet for interviews or hiring, but teams have been discouraged by Major League Baseball from making such decisions or announcing them during the World Series.
The Rockies, in the market for a manager since Jim Tracy resigned on Oct. 7, have interviewed Tom Runnells, the team's bench coach under Tracy since 2009, and veteran free-agent first baseman Jason Giambi, who is willing to retire if offered an opportunity to manage. Triple-A Colorado Springs manager Stu Cole originally was considered a candidate, but he is expected to interview for a Major League coaching position instead.
Club officials had discussions over the last couple of days and decided to interview outside candidates. Runnells and Giambi remain candidates.
The Rockies have not identified any of the external candidates or how many will be interviewed. Possible candidates could include Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Padres front office special assistant Brad Ausmus, A's third-base coach Mike Gallego, Dodgers third-base coach Tim Wallach, and D-backs third-base coach Matt Williams.
