Rox to expand talks with Giambi, Weiss, Williams

DENVER -- Over the next few days, Jason Giambi, Walt Weiss and Matt Williams -- candidates for the Rockies' managerial job that Jim Tracy resigned on Oct. 7 -- will be at Coors Field to meet face-to-face with top club officials, a Major League source said Thursday.

The meetings will be with Rockies owner and CEO Dick Monfort, general manager Dan O'Dowd and senior vice president of baseball operations Bill Geivett. Another candidate, Tom Runnells, the Rockies' bench coach since 2009, has already had his meeting with all three top Rockies officials.

Giambi, who played for the Rockies from 2009 through last season; Weiss, a former Rockies shortstop who has worked for the club as a special adviser and instructor in recent years; and Williams, who is the D-backs' third-base coach and is managing several Rockies prospects as part of an Arizona Fall League team, all have interviewed with the club in recent days and weeks.

The Rockies also have talked to former White Sox and Mets manager Jerry Manuel and Pete Mackanin, who was the Phillies' bench coach and has had stints as interim manager with the Pirates and the Reds.

The Rockies had hinted at possibly making a decision this week, but O'Dowd's travel schedule prevented it, plus the club decided it wanted to conduct the more extensive interviews.
